Complimentary Opportunity
Scholarships sponsored by Travelers helped nine members attend ACA’s Annual Convention & Exposition
Credit and collection industry conferences can help bring a new perspective to your work
and change how you respond to the
current legal and regulatory
environment. The tips, information,
face-to-face networking opportunities
and special events available at
conferences are often superior to any
other training experiences.
Through scholarships sponsored by
Travelers and designed to assist ACA
members by providing financial
assistance for convention registration or
airfare, nine members were able to
attend ACA International’s Annual
Convention & Exposition at Gaylord
National on the Potomac in
Washington, D.C., July 11-14, 2010.
After sifting through the many
inspirational testimonials submitted by
hopeful candidates, the 2010
Convention Scholarship Committee
awarded scholarships to the following
individuals:
• Brandi Beller, BMSI Credit Services,
Sioux City, Iowa—complimentary
airfare
• Michael Bower, Mid-America

The scholarship recipients had
positive and productive convention
experiences—filled with memories to
last a lifetime.
For Sharon Marcano, collection
supervisor for MedShield in
Indianapolis, the opportunity to discuss
how other companies are adapting to
case law, such as Foti and the issues
surrounding voicemail messages, was
one of the highlights of the week.
“It seems that all of us are struggling
with this issue,” she said.
Brandon Weese, compliance officer
for Debt Recovery Solutions in
Mansfield, Ohio, agreed.
“It really brings a closer perspective
to industry trends because you discover
the issues you’re looking at aren’t so far
away,” he said. “It’s not some other
world; it could be the other side of the
country or your neighboring state, but
the bottom line is it could end up
impacting your agency’s daily
operations.”
Weese said it’s easy to get stuck in a
routine and forget what it’s like to
interact with other professionals
outside your specific niche. Attending
a conference like ACA’s Annual
Convention can bridge that gap.
